20 years ago, the LUMES programme opened up its door to its first batch of students. A booklet detailing the history of LUMES and interviews with alumni and teachers has now been launched to mark this very special anniversary.
– With this booklet, we wanted to capture both the historical development of LUMES, and the programme’s very unique spirit. That is why we have included sections on history, interviews with alumni and teachers, and examples of course work, says Karin Steen, Director of LUMES.
While working on the booklet, what struck her and the team who worked with her the most, was the sense of togetherness the alumni expressed when talking about their experience of the programme, and the ways in which LUMES has given them tools to look at the world from different perspectives.
– It seems clear that LUMES has made a lasting, positive impression on most of the students that have graduated throughout the years. For us, as coordinators, this is something we are very happy about. It shows that LUMES is more than just an educational programme.
She notes that while the programme has gone through many changes during its 20 years in existence, the teachers have always strived to bring the latest expertise in environment and sustainability research into the curriculum.
– Today, we notice that the students have more knowledge of basic sustainability issues when they come to LUMES. This makes it a very inspiring time to be a teacher, since for a long time, sustainability was not on the societal agenda. It also makes you realise how far we have come since LUMES started.
Karin Steen says that she hopes that the LUMES alumni and current students will enjoy reading the booklet.
– Another aim with the booklet was to create a document which alumni could recognise themselves in: either from a picture, a memory or an interview. It’s a way of honoring all the amazing students who have passed through our doors. Without students, LUMES wouldn’t be what it is today.
