Project summary
Rapid urbanization is expected to lead to a housing shortage in Indian cities of about 30 million by 2022, which creates appalling conditions for urban poor. The government of India has addressed this problem by defining “Housing for All” by 2022 as its goal. This situation creates a huge demand for architects and urban planners, who can deal with the complex challenges of sustainable social housing and the development of inclusive urban communities. To complement the vertical policy making in India with a horizontal exchange of good practices, the BInUCom project aims at fostering the collaboration between different Higher Education Institutes in- and outside India.

The purpose of this project is to increase the relevance of Architecture and Planning Education in developing inclusive urban communities. It aims to challenge current teaching approaches and assist new course and curriculum development that take account of societal needs and the complex challenges of sustainable social housing.

In the context of the BInUCom project, different thematic workshops and site visits are conducted. The ones held at LUCSUS focus on the issues of inclusive low-income housing, risk reduction and adaptation planning.

News

  • In September 2018, LUCSUS staff visited two of the partner institutions in India. First, Ebba Brink joined the Local Dissemination workshop in Vijayawada. In the following, Ebba was joined by four LUCSUS colleagues: Karin Steen, Sara Gabrielsson, Noomi Egan and Amanda Elgh. Together, they held an elective course for BSC students in architecture at KRVIA. The aim of the course was to give students an introduction to three key topics of sustainable local development: climate risk, gender and sanitation - and present them with theoretical and practical tools to address them in their work. The course also contained a compoment on teamwork and science communication. For more information see FORMAS EXTRACT and Lund University Magazine.
