Education at LUCSUS

gov

One important task for LUCSUS is to initiate and coordinate interdisciplinary courses related to environment and sustainable development.

The unifying methodological approach taken by LUCSUS is system analysis, incorporating both system thinking and system dynamics. In short, system analysis is a methodology for understanding complex problems, across several disciplinary areas. In the context of sustainability LUCSUS researchers examine a variety of human-nature system interactions from this system analysis perspective.

Master Programmes

LUMES

One important task for LUCSUS is to guide the LUMES programme, Lund University International Master’s Programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science. This unique programme consists of students from all over the world and from a variety of scientific disciplines. The most recent batch of LUMES students comprises 40 students from 28 countries, 5 continents and 8 different academic disciplines. Furthermore, the programme is based on systems analysis as a unifying and common means of communication between disciplines.

The programme began in 1997 and since then 325 students from 76 different countries have graduated. But LUMES is not only an MSc programme during 18 months, it also has an Alumni network in which former students communicate and meet. The first reunion of all LUMES Alumni students was held in Lund in April 2005.

In September 2005 the programme was extended from three to four terms. LUMES changed its name to Lund University International Master’s Programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science.

GEM

LUCSUS is also one of the teaching partners in an Erasmus Mundus programme.
Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management, GEM.

Three European institutes have formed a consortium to offer this unique Master’s programme The programme has been approved by European Commission with Eramus Mundus status and accompanying scholarships. The programme is run sequentially by the three European institutions that have excellent international reputations in geo-information science for environmental modelling and management:

  • University of Southampton (United Kingdom)
  • Lund University (Sweden)
  • International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation ITC
    (The Netherlands)

Lund University is responsible for courses in GIS, which are hosted by Centre for GIS and courses in System Analysis, hosted by LUCSUS.

u21ensamLUCSUS was involved in the Universitas 21, U21, Summer School Course 2005 "Sustainable Development of Global Society". U21 is an international network of 21 leading research-intensive universities in thirteen countries. Lund university invited each U21 member to send a group of five students and one teacher to participate this three-week course. Students and teachers were representing several academic disciplines, from both social and natural sciences.
Students were having at least two years of academic studies, and the teachers should either be active in teaching subjects related to Sustainable development, or interested in including it in the current curriculum. Teachers were given a specific programme addressing the pedagogical problems of integrating sustainability perspectives in teaching and how to teach trans-disciplinary subjects.
