Earth System Information Science

J. Ronald Eastman

Director, Clarks Labs
Clark University

One of the most prominent scholars in the field of GIS and spatial dynamics is visiting LUCSUS and INES, Professor Ron Eastman from Clark University. Ron is the founder of the famous IDRISI project and software.

It has become increasingly apparent that the earth system has entered a highly dynamic and transitional phase. With a goal of monitoring these changes a wide variety of earth observing systems have been put in place providing a wealth of environmental image time series. However, the development of tools to process and analyze these data has not kept pace. In this presentation a suite of software tools for image time series analysis will be presented, including tools for seasonal and inter-annual trend analysis, series
decomposition based on Principal Components and Empirical Orthogonal Teleconnection analysis, Fourier and Wavelet spectral analysis and lagged linear modeling tools. Based on this presentation, the question will be raised as to whether there is now the need for a new disciplinary focus that might be called Earth System Information Science.

LUCSUS Workshop

“Legal Empowerment of the Poor”

”Making the Law Work for Everyone”,
the report by the High Level Commission as a pdf file »

A  report launched the 3rd of June 2008, found that four billion people – the majority of the world’s people – are excluded from the rule of law.

The report, by the High Level Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor, a group comprised 30 high level commissioners from across the world  and  co-chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright and Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto, called on governments, international institutions and civil society to make legal empowerment a top agenda item in the fight against global poverty. The Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor aims to make legal protection and economic opportunity not the privilege of the few but the right of all.

More information on the High Level Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor,  is found on their homepage: www.undp.org/legalempowerment .

Across the world, over four billion people are deprived of legal rights.
As a consequence these people have substantially restricted opportunities to better their lives and to get out of poverty. The lack of legal protection may range from the absence of the most fundamental legal identity of individuals to absence of land, property and labour rights. The multitude of linkages between poverty and legal protection of the poor is to a large extent a neglected field of research and education, not only in Sweden but also at the international scene.
