Smokeless Stove
This is a project in Kisumu district Kenya where a smokeless stove has been introduced to subsistence farmers.
Through the use of the stove the project aims to:
Improving Health
Acute respiratory infections are the primary cause of morbidity and the most common reason to seek health care worldwide. Indoor air pollution, like smoke from cooking stoves, is a significant contributing factor. Women and children are most affected. The stove’s chimney minimizes the indoor smoke.
Boosting Local Economy
The stoves are made by local entrepreneurs; this creates business opportunities for local potters and tin smiths. The users of the stove save money due to less fuel consumption and less medical expenses.
Halting Deforestation
Deforestation accounts for 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Since 1963, forest cover in Kenya has decreased by 83%. The stoves consume less than 50% of fuel wood compared to the traditional cooking stove. Trees and forest can be saved and the smokeless and fuel efficient stoves can be one of the contributing factors to halt deforestation.
We made a film to present the project
