Workshop 1

    A child oriented perspective

Learning for sustainable development in Swedish preschools

    Workshop facilitator/s:
Ingrid Engdahl, Stockholm University, Dept of Child and Youth Studies
Eva Ärlemalm-Hagsér, University of Gothenburg, Dept of Education.

In the past decades the concept of education for sustainable development has influenced educational policies on international, national and local levels. So far, knowledge about the concept of education for sustainable development as a pedagogical content and practice in the Swedish preschool has not been discussed and problematized to any significant extent in scientific research; it is becoming urgently necessary to scrutinize how constructions of global political agenda influence children’s everyday life in preschool.
In November 2008, researchers and policy makers co-wrote the Gothenburg Recommendations on ESD, an action-oriented document summarizing general and specific steps to be discussed and promoted in Early Childhood Education as in all other parts of Education.
This presentation highlights how the global agenda ´education for sustainable development´ influences the local educational arena in regional municipal political steering documents and how Swedish preschool children understand the concept.
We will also discuss how the youngest children with their holistic approach to life can integrate and become empowered through ESD. Furthermore, we will give some examples of how the Gothenburg recommendations, both the general and the specific recommendations for early childhood education, are implemented in the Swedish preschool. The presentation attaches special importance to a child oriented perspective.

Learning about children´s rights in a changing climate. Methods, e.g climate roleplay, to engage and create knowledge about multidisciplinary global issues.

    Workshop facilitators:
    Karolina Sandahl, Global College
    Students, Global College

Already, children’s rights are violated due to the negative effects of climate change. Children in poor countries are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child all children have the rights to take part in decisions that influence their every day life and future.

This workshop emphasizes teaching methods aimed to enhance the possibilities of youngsters to participate in and affect our world in a sustainable way. The workshop aims to inspire the reflections on teaching methods that could bring knowledge about climate change from a perspective of rights. Furthermore, methods that could create possibilities for youth to become important agents in issues concerning the development of our world. In other words, this workshops is about both developing knowledge and the ability to act.

The methods presented are from the teaching material: ”Children´s rights in a changing climate”. This material is developed by teachers at Global College in Stockholm assigned by Plan Sweden. One of the methods from the material is a role play on climate change. Climate role play makes it easier for children to follow climate negotiations and to learn more about the consequences of climate change for e.g. children in poor countries. The aims of this role play are to experience the complexity in climate negotiations and to analyze and reflect on solutions for a sustainable future.

This workshop is for anyone interested in working with global issues using active teaching methods setting the student in the center of a multidisciplinary approach.

    The Global School/International Programme Office

Facing new challenges due to globalization, we all need to adapt to the new situation. It is evident that the global agenda does indeed affect the local municipality. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) becomes a key issue in order to make sense in a complex world. This seminar presents strategies in different municipalities, where ESD has become an essential pedagogic component, from Pre-School to Upper Secondary School. Concrete examples of this will be shown. Moreover, the political process and ambition as well as the structure of the project will be displayed and discussed. The Global School's role in the work will also be brought to light.

The International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University, Sweden has developed, and since 1999 successfully managed, the Young Masters Programme for Sustainable Development (YMP). The programme is a web-based, interactive distance-learning course, designed for students between 16-18 years of age, which focuses on issues related to sustainable development and preventive environmental strategies.

The education facilitates concrete sustainability skills and provides easy-to-understand information on the major sustainability challenges facing humanity. It has a true global outreach - students from 113 countries have participated in the programme.

In China, the YMP has been distributed in cooperation with the Centre for Environmental Education & Communication (CEEC) of the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP). The YMP in China is also conducted in close co-operation with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Embassy in China. More than 5000 Chinese students has been educated within the YMP. IIIEE is now initiating a dynamic development and expansion phase of the programme in that will make it possible to educate up to 100 000 simultaneously by 2015.

“Lund Calling” is an another and on-going pilot YMP-project run by the IIIEE, Lund University and Lund Municipality with the aim to implement YMP in schools in Lund, using the programme as an aid for teachers in themes overarching multiple disciplines as well as in subjects concerning global interrelations.
But of equal importance is that the local schools and teachers are connected with international communities and networks to promote individual empowerment, interactive learning and thus to help illustrate sustainability issues from both a local and a global standpoint. The project is evaluated through pedagogical research by Learning Lund at Lund University, and some of the results from this research will be presented at the Conference.

During this Workshop you will learn how to use the YMP tool by hands-on experience and discussions with teachers and pedagogical researchers from Lund.

How do we go from words to action? From “Why” and “What” in the Gothenburg recommendations to “How” in our own practices!

    Workshop facilitators:
Marie Arehag, Project leader, ESD-project, Chalmers
Inger Björneloo, Lecturer, Dep. of Education University of Gothenburg
Bo Samuelsson, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Environment and Sustainability, GMV, Chalmers/University of Gothenburg

UNESCO, governments and other organizational actors cannot accomplish anything without actors in local practice. A transformation of the recommendations and declarations into human face-to-face interaction is needed.

In this workshop we will interpret the Gothenburg Recommendations our own specific practices. We will also have the more recent Bonn declaration in mind.

What do they mean for each of us?

We will discuss possible actions from our different perspectives, whether we are educators at different levels, or policy makers setting overall conditions for learning and teaching.

Among the outcomes of this workshop will be: Shared experiences, identification of needs for new prerequisites for our practices, and outlines of research questions on How to pursue ESD.
