Frank Biermann reflects on 10 years of close collaboration with Lund University
For ten years, 2009 - 2018, Lund University hosted the global secretariat of The Earth System Governance Project. During these years, the ESG network developed into the world’s largest social science network on sustainability politics. Now, when Frank Biermann receives his well-deserved honorary doctorate, he will reflect upon those 10 years and discuss some of the key moments, concepts, and challenges.
This will be an informal talk with opportunities to discuss important topics related to global sustainability politics.
Frank is a research professor of Global Sustainability Governance with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He is an internationally leading scholar in the domain of organisation of global institutions and organisations, for which he was awarded the Volvo Environmental Prize in 2024. He pioneered the ‘earth system’ governance paradigm in global change research in 2005 and was the founder and first chair (2008-2018) of the Earth System Governance (ESG) Project, a leading global transdisciplinary research network of over 600 sustainability scholars.
For 10 years (2009-18), the ESG project was hosted and coordinated by LUCSUS. During this period, the project developed into the world’s leading network for social science research on global environmental problems. During this time, LUCSUS also co-organised (with the Department of Political Science) two of the international ESG Conferences, in 2012 and 2017.
