Urban Governance & Transformation

The world is undergoing the largest wave of urban growth in history. More than half of the world’s population now lives in towns and cities, and by 2030 this number will swell to about 5 billion. This development has actualised the need for research on a wide range of sustainability issues, including urban poverty, exclusion, urban disasters and climate change, and requires a transformation from the individual to the global level.

At LUCSUS, we address the challenges and opportunities associated with increasing urbanisation to support transformations towards sustainability.

Our research offers insights into both the nature and dynamics of structural issues related to urbanisation as well as constructive actions to move towards more sustainable and equitable urban futures.

Many of the projects we work on involve close cooperation with stakeholders such as citizen groups and city administrations, and both critical and applied research approaches are applied.
